Cyst Excision Photos

Cysts are sac-like structures that contain fluids or gaseous material. They can develop in different parts of your body and can vary in size. While most cysts are painless, you may want them removed because they can get infected. This skin condition can also be a cosmetic concern for some. Fortunately, they can be easily removed with a procedure known as cyst excision. This involves cutting out the entire sac of the cyst to prevent them from returning. Shown below are cyst excision photos of actual patients at Dr Laniewski clinic in Sydney.

Causes of cysts

The most common causes of cysts are:

  • Build-up of fluids in blocked ducts
  • Clogged oil glands
  • Family history
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Injury to the blood vessel
  • Parasitic infection
  • Piercings
  • Tumours

How a cyst excision is performed

During your initial consultation, we will assess your general health. This helps determine the type of your cyst and the appropriate medical management.

If your cyst is caused by an infection, we recommend treating the infection first. This achieves better cosmetic results because it does not produce scars. However, if your cyst is infected or you want it removed for cosmetic purposes, we will perform a cyst excision. During the procedure, you will receive a local or general anaesthesia. Once your skin is numb, we will make a cut around the cyst sac to remove it. To make your scars less noticeable, we will create the incisions according to the natural lines in your skin. After removing the cyst, we will close the incisions using sutures.

What to expect after a cyst excision

After the procedure, we will apply an antibiotic ointment to your wound and will cover it with gauze. To prevent bleeding, we recommend that you apply firm pressure over the treated area. Your gauze can become soaked with blood or fluid but this is normal. To prevent infection, you should change your wound dressing regularly. After 36 hours, you can take a shower. You will need to wait for 1 week before you can engage in any strenuous activity. If you have non-dissolvable stitches, you need to return after 7 to 10 days for removal.
